Sunderland People First successfully campaigned to create as many changing places as possible.
Changing places toilets are different from other accessible toilets. Some people with disabilities need extra room and additional facilities to allow them to use toilets safely and comfortably.
Changing places provide:
a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench
a tracking hoist system or mobile hoist
space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers
a non-slip floor
Changing places are available in Barnes Park, The Aquatic Centre, the National Glass Centre, and primary care centres in Houghton and Bunny Hill. The latest changing place to be opened is below the Fat Buddha on Seaburn’s sea front. Click here to find out more information about the changing place at the Fat Buddha
